Remoteness. Puerto Maldonado is an emerging city located in the heart of the Amazon rainforest with easy access for all travellers. However, to reach the truly remote Amazonian wilderness, visitors must travel beyond the city limits, often via boat, to reach lodges located in places like the Tambopata National Reserve. This means the city serves as an accessible gateway, but a journey into the remote jungle still requires time and further travel. This includes a combination of car and riverboat travel.
Pace and Mobility. This tour is expected to run at a moderate pace. This trip is unsuitable for visitors with impaired mobility. You will be required to move about unassisted, including handling your luggage, getting on and of vehicles and lining up at check points. Expect long riverboat journeys to reach the points of interest in this trip
Trip Grading: This trip is rated Introductory to Moderate. It involves a combination of gentle walking and sightseeing through remote jungle areas. The terrain includes steep undulations, muddy surfaces, and uneven terrain. You will need a reasonable level of fitness-good health and be comfortable camping for consecutive days in basic conditions.
Suggested Preparation: The fitter you are, the more you will enjoy this trip. At least a few months prior to departure, you should try an active exercise routine on a regular basis. This should include hard walking, jogging, leg strengthening and aerobic fitness. Please discuss the right exercise routine for you with your fitness instructor.
Flexibility. This trip will be conducted as outlined in the itinerary. This includes plenty of time to explore at your own pace. Refer to our Terms and Conditions for further details.
Weather: The dry season (May–October) is often recommended for more predictable weather and easier trails — though wildlife viewing is good year-round and the wet season changes access and scenery.
Trip Logistics: To make your visit to the Amazon rainforest is a unique experience, make sure you pack lightweight breathable clothes, long sleeves and long pants for mosquitoes and trails. Bring along good walking shoes, waterproof jacket, hat, insect repellent (DEET), binoculars, camera, headlamp. We strongly advise you check with your medical practitioner for an up-to-date routine vaccination program, including yellow fever and the travel health guidance for Peru. Make sure to carry travel insurance that cover remote areas.
